About

About Randy House, Memphis Home Repair & Painting Contractor

Second generation in the trade, retired Bartlett Fire Captain, and still the one who shows up to do the work.

I started in this trade at 16, working alongside my father. He was a contractor, and he had one rule I never got away from:

Don’t leave a job you wouldn’t want somebody to see with your name on it.
The short version

Fifty years, two jobs, one rule

I never left the trade, and I never ran more than a two-man crew.

  1. At sixteen

    Working alongside my father

He taught me to prep before I paint, to find out why the wood rotted before I replace it, and to buy the better material even when the cheaper one is sitting right next to it on the rack. I still work that way.

  2. For most of my adult life

    Two jobs at once

I spent my career with the Bartlett Fire Department and retired as a Captain. On my days off, I kept the family trade going: painting, drywall, carpentry, whatever a house needed.

  3. Past Fifty Years

I oversee the work with my two-man crew

When you hire me and my crew, I oversee the work to ensure it is performed correctly.

How I run a job

What my father taught me

It carries over more than people expect.

  1. You show up on time.
  2. You look at a situation before you touch it.
  3. You work a plan, and when the plan changes you say so out loud.
  4. You answer for what you did, because somebody is going to look at it afterward.

That's how I run a job.

People ask why I haven't quit. The honest answer is that I like doing it right. There's a difference between a paint job that looks good the day the check clears and one that still looks good in eight years. I know how to build the second one. That's the part I never got tired of.
